Getting started

Do browser games need a download?

A browser can avoid a traditional installer and still load game resources. Check the particular project before assuming it needs no files.

Three different things to check

Installer

A separate program you install on your computer.

Browser resources

Code and data that a website loads during a session.

Your game files

Files a specific project may ask you to supply.

Treat these as separate questions. A “no install” description does not settle the other two.

What we observed

Kino displayed download, loading and graphics-preparation stages before its start prompt. This is a record of the loading sequence, not a complete gameplay test.

Example sequence: download resources, load game data, prepare graphics, ready to start

When a project mentions your own files

The Skate website says to use your own converted copy. We also observed data loading without choosing a file during that session. We have not resolved the difference, so its launch guidance is on hold.

Read the original project’s instructions, keep code requirements separate from game-asset requirements, and do not assume a repository includes everything needed to play.

Read the Skate research notes

Before opening a project

  1. 01
    Read its current requirements.

Identify the project and the version the instructions refer to.

  2. 02
    Watch the loading stage.

Record the visible message if it stops. A progress number is not a total game-size specification.

  3. 03
    Keep uncertain claims visible.

Offline play, save persistence and total data size need their own checks.

Common questions

Does “no install” mean nothing is downloaded?

No. It can mean there is no separate installer while the browser still loads resources.

Can I use a native setup guide for a browser build?

Do not assume so. Use instructions tied to the browser project and its current build.
